From Earth Science to Chemistry

After the science fair, STEM class focused on earth science. We talked about the layers of the earth and created a volcano in a beaker modeling how magma breaks through the earth's crust.  We also had a great time identifying the three major types of rocks - igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic while observing the rock collection.
We also discussed the names of various landforms and bodies of water.

We transitioned from earth science to chemistry by creating our own crystals.  We made some supersaturated solutions and cooled them so they would crystalize much like crystals are formed in the earth's crust.  This week, we are observing our crystals under the microscope and learning how to use the microscope as well as we discuss the chemical process that formed our crystals.
